Frequently Asked Questions by parents:
What is a fraternity? Quite different from how fraternities are portrayed in movies from Hollywood, fraternities here at VU consist of approximately 35% of all undergraduates. This is a good amount of people but no so many that everyone is Greek. This allows the Greeks on campus to be selective in their membership guidelines. Approximately 80% of the leaders of campus organizations here at Valpo are members of VU Greek Life. All this is to help define a fraternity at VU as a group of men devoted to principles and also philanthropy and leadership opportunities.
What are the values of Phi Sigma Kappa? Phi Sigs are united nationally by the three cardinal virtues of the stimulation of Scholarship, the promotion of Brotherhood, and the development of Character. We strive to implement these through the hours we spend doing philanthropic work as well as studying and hanging out. Phi Sigma Kappa will allow for your son to develop all three of these while their academic pursuits remain the first and foremost of their time at Valpo.
How much is Phi Sigma Kappa going to cost if my son chooses it? Many people think that a fraternity is a very expensive option. Actually it is cheaper if the member chooses to live in the house. If they live out through the various benefits and opportunities they receive the price is small compared to what one receives. What are the policies of Phi Sigma Kappa concerning associate members? We hold diligently to our policy against hazing. As a future pastor myself, I wasn’t interested in joining a house that would make me do things against my beliefs. My experience pledging was great. I was able to take approximately 7 weeks to decide if the house I had chosen was somewhere that I wanted to be for the rest of my time at college. It was as much about the brothers getting to know me as it was for me to get connected to them. I was able to learn all the local and national history and information as well as the local brothers really well. It was an awesome experience.
What is the stereotype of Phi Sigma Kappa members at VU? We are not all one major, we aren’t all one type of person, but the overriding quality that I see are people who came to college saying they would never join a fraternity. That means they would never join an animal house. Instead they came to VU and saw that Phi Sigma Kappa stood out as a brotherhood where they would develop into the men they wanted to be. Phi Sigma Kappa then becomes the fraternity of those who are dedicated to common ideals and moving toward a lofty purpose. I am proud of my fraternity and I know that your son would grow to be proud of what they have accomplished if they join also. |
